“The afternoon mum moved in, my sister and I were invited to have lunch with her to help settle her in. After lunch, we took her for a walk around the place and finally showed mum her very own room with the big bright window which we had furnished with her things. She was pleased with what she saw. Then the magic happened: the lady across the hallway came over to meet us. She was wearing a pink cardigan she had knitted herself. Our mum was wearing her favourite red cardigan which mum had knitted herself. Mum was a terrific knitter. The lady across the hall came right up to mum and touched her sweater and admired it and compared it to her own sweater. Mum realized she had a knitted scarf that matched the lady’s sweater and gave it to her right there on the spot. There was an instant connection and from that moment on, the staff told us they were inseparable. Imagine mum making such a wonderful friend so late in life. But it was easy because of the relaxed and friendly environment at Shaughnessy.”
